Bassist Euan Burton and his Quartet will be touring the UK later this month and into December.
On his recent record Too Much Love Burton deepens his penchant for developing thematic material that runs the course of the album, while artfully balancing composition with improvisation.
As always Euan’s collaborators play a central part in the music and the quartet contains three of his long-time associates. Featured on piano is Tom Gibbs, one of Burton’s oldest collaborators, Alyn Cosker (drums) a powerhouse of the Scottish music scene who’s virtuosic talents come from years of experience with jazz artists such as Tommy Smith, Lee Konitz and Joe Locke and Adam Jackson (sax) a rising star of the Scottish music scene.
We’re excited to announce the release of Too Much Love – Deluxe Edition . Too Much Love was released in November of 2014 and the new Deluxe Edition contains an additional two bonus tracks that were previously unreleased. It’s available as a digital album only but customers who purchase CDs will get an immediate download of the full Deluxe Edition digital album. Check out this brand new track:
For customers who prefer to purchase on iTunes and other digital online retailers, the Deluxe Edition album will be available on the 22nd of June. The quartet will also be touring the music throughout 2015, stay tuned for more information.
Whirlwind Recordings was founded by Michael Janisch in early 2010, and just a little over three years later with a catalog of 25 critically acclaimed releases including Euan Burton’s Occurrences they have decided it was time to throw the first Whirlwind party. What better way than to host a festival, and that’s exactly what they’re going to do on October 10, 11 and 12 this year at one of Europe’s leading cultural landmarks, the Kings Place in London.
Euan will be appearing on October 11 at 8pm as part of the Whirlwind Quartet alongside George Crowley, Tom Gibbs & Dave Hamblett.

Here is a little information about the group:
Four of Europe’s guiding lights and in-demand jazz musicians- still in their twenties- come together to perform as the ‘Whirlwind Quartet‘ to showcase music from each of their critically acclaimed WWR albums. Saxophonist George Crowley’s debut album Paper Universe, pianist Tom Gibbs’ debut Fear of Flying, double bassist Euan Burton’s Occurrences and drummer Dave Hamblett’s debut Light at Night have made a huge impact on the UK scene (gaining a string of accolades in the press) and established each member as a noteworthy bandleader and composer of considerably depth. This will be their first performance together and each leader will present a selection of tunes from their respective albums.
Euan is back on the road this week for a short tour visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland and Nowy Targ and Krakow in Poland. The band features Tom Gibbs on Piano, Alyn Cosker on Drums and Adam Jackson on Alto Saxophone. Check the shows page for details.
As a taster here’s a free live track for you to stream recorded at The Jazz Bar, Edinburgh during last years May Occurrences tour.
Tom Gibbs’ ‘Fear of Flying’ was released on Monday 15th October. It will be available on iTunes and over 50 online retailers, also through the Whirlwind Recordings website.
I am very proud to have played on and produced this album and can’t wait to get out on the road at the end of November to take this music round the country. Tom’s writing and playing is really fantastic and by featuring three fifths of the Occurrences band I almost think of this album as a cousin to Occurrences.
Leading UK Tenor Saxophonist Booth brings this quartet to Glasgow as part of a Scottish tour visiting Aberdeen and Edinburgh.
Paul is currently in the Steve Winwood band and can also be seen touring with Basia, the BBC Big Band, Michael Janisch Quintet and has performed worldwide with the likes of Carlos Santana, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton, Riverdance, Ingrid Jensen, Matt Bianco, Eddie Henderson, Alex Wilson, Roberto Pla, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Snowboy and Jane Monheit.
They will be performing material from his latest album Trilateral, which featured three trio formations, one with Clarence Penn & Matt Brewer recorded in New York, one with Ross Stanley and Andrew Bain and the other with Phil Robson & Adriano Adewale. This latest album offering has been receiving rave reviews and airplay in the UK.
A little update with regards as what I’ve been up to.
I’m really excited about the launch of Tom Gibbs new album ‘Fear of Flying’ on Whirlwind Recordings on October 15th. We recorded this album last year and I produced it as well as played on it. It features Will Vinson and James Maddren as well as Tom and I and Tom wrote some really beautiful music for it. There are already some preview clips for it up on it’s Whirlwind page. You can also check out Tom’s site for more details and the November album launch tour dates. I’ll be posting them here too.
I also had the pleasure of producing trumpeter Sean Gibbs new EP ‘Dawn’ with the fantastic engineer/producer Garry Boyle. It was recorded at Castlesound Studio and mixed and mastered at The Depot studios. It feature some great young Scottish talents in Pete Johnstone (piano), Brodie Jarvie (bass) and Stephen Henderson (drums). You can hear and buy the EP over here at Sean’s Bandcamp page. It was supported by Creative Scotland’s CashBack for Creativity Programme.
Also on the studio side of things I also produced, mixed and mastered Michael Fletcher’s due album. It’s due out sometime next year. I’ll let you know when.
A great time was had at the Edinburgh Fringe this year at The Jazz Bar. As well as leading my own group for two nights Tom Gibbs and I did a three night run with genius of the drums Ari Hoenig. It was great to all play together again (Ari played on Tom and I’s co-lead album Forgotten Things). If you haven’t checked out Ari you will be amazed. A truly incredible musician and a joy to play with. We had some fun! Tom made some recordings on his portable recorder so I might be able to share a track or two with you at some point.
That’s as much as I can remember for the moment although there was plenty other things happening. I’m working on some new music at the moment and getting set for a trip to Belgium this weekend to play with Findlay Napier and The Bar Room Mountaineers and Rachel Hair. There are a few live tracks sitting on some hard drives as well that I’m hoping to get out to you all in one way or another. Keep checking in and I’ll let you all the details.
